  Halloween Fun

2008 RUBY TUESDAY’S TRIPLE CROWN OF RUNNING

Parks & Rec. is proud to announce this tenth-year event

held in partnership with Ruby Tuesday’s Corporation as sponsor.

This event consists of the Spring Sprint (April 12), the Scholars Run (Aug. 16) and the Reindeer Run (Dec. 7).

To be eligible for the Triple Crown cash awards and a special memento, participants must compete in all three races. 

To be eligible to win door prizes valued at a minimum of $100, participation in two races is required.

Both runners and walkers at each event are eligible for great door prizes.

 

 

FOOTHILLS WOMEN’S INVITATIONAL

 Serving as the state qualifier, this tournament

 gives local women’s teams an opportunity to

earn a berth to their respective state tournament.

“WALK AT LUNCH DAY”

Sponsored by Blount BEneFITs, East Tennessee Worksite Wellness Roundtable and Parks & Rec.

To encourage physical activity, offer a mental break,

and provide something simple and fun that employees and families can do together!

Participants can walk in any safe walking area in Blount County or join us at our special event site at the Pistol Creek Station area of the Greenbelt (at the Blount County Library Pedestrian Bridge).

IF YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO THE EVENT SITE:

We encourage downtown business employees to walk to the site!

  For those who are not within walking distance, parking is available at the Library (outer perimeter),

parking garages on Harper Avenue, or at any of the Greenbelt Parking areas nearby.

 

 Visit our check-in area for lots of good information and giveaways from area merchants!

Find out how walking can help raise money for the American Red Cross

in assisting victims of the recent West Tennessee tornadoes!

DUCK POND FISHING DERBY FOR KIDS

This event for youth Ages 2-15 is held during “Free Fishing Week” in sponsorship with Wal-Mart.

Trophies are awarded in each age division for the largest fish and the most fish caught.

All participants receive a ribbon and are eligible to win door prizes including a grand prize.

FREEDOMFEST 2008

This popular early celebration of Independence Day will be held

at the Alcoa Duck Pond on June 28 (Raindate: June 29) and features musical

entertainment, food, and free games and activities for children. 

Springbrook Pool will offer games and contests as well.

The evening ends with a spectacular fireworks show at dark.

SMOKY MOUNTAIN CLASSIC

Considered the premier softball tournament in the country,

the 2008 “Classic” will feature the top-ranked teams in the United States.

AREA 15 SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The Area 15 Special Olympics Program is open to Blount County citizens age 8 years and older. The ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them fair opportunities to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing public awareness of their capabilities and needs.

 

Schools and centers throughout Blount County participate in these events. However, any person whose school or center does not participate OR any adult who does not attend a school or center is eligible to compete as an independent athlete. Call Cookie Crowson at 983-9244 for more information.  Parks & Rec conducts seven athletic competitions throughout the year.

Volunteers are always needed to provide many types of assistance during Special Olympics events. Potential volunteers should keep in mind that all competitions are held during regular school hours.
