Refund Policy for Programs

Refunds may be given up to five (5) working days prior to the beginning of each program. If your cancellation causes the program number to fall below the required minimum, the refund will be contingent upon the vacancy being filled. After classes begin, refunds will be made for the following reasons only: 1) Illness or Injury 2) Moving from the Blount County area 3) Cancellation of the program by Parks & Rec. Refunds will be prorated according to the number of classes already held. All refunds are subject to a $5.00 administrative cost charge, unless the program has been cancelled by Parks & Rec.

Rain Policy: All participants are responsible for calling Parks & Rec. at 983-9244 in the afternoon in the event of inclement weather. Occasionally, decisions will need to be made at the courts. A make-up class will be held for each class cancelled with the make-up date determined by the instructor.

Summer Junior Interclub Tennis Program

Parks & Rec. is offering a summer interclub tennis program for Ages 8-18. Teams will be formed based on ages and abilities. Tennis experience is required. Practices and home matches will be held at Springbrook Tennis Courts in Alcoa. Away matches will be held in the GKTA area against other participating teams. Total cost will include GKTA membership fees, two team shirts for matches, balls, league fees, coaching administration and league administration fees, and end of season pool party. All participants must be a USTA member for the year as well by visiting www.usta.com before match play begins. A parent coach-captain is needed for each team to organize additional practices (if needed), complete and turn in team line-ups, collect USTA forms (if not done on-line), and enter information and tennis scores into Tennis Link. Anticipated teams as follows: 10 & Under Beginner, 12 & Under Beginner, 14 & Under Beginner, 18 & Under Intermediate.

Karate

Parks & Rec. has partnered with Maryville Isshinryu Karate School to offer the following classes to both youth and adults. They are the oldest martial arts school in Blount County and are accredited by the International Isshinryu Karate Association. Participants will learn self defense, sparring techniques, kata and much more. Benefits of Karate include confidence, flexibility, concentration, balance, discipline and respect.

Healthy Blount Triple Crown of Running

Triple Crown Rules

This event consists of the Spring Sprint (April 11), the Scholars Run (August 8) and the Reindeer Run (December 6).  To be eligible for the Triple Crown cash awards and a special memento, participants must compete in all three races.  To be eligible to win door prizes valued at a minimum of $100, participation in two races is required. Both runners and walkers at each event are eligible for great door prizes.

This is the first event of the 2015 Healthy Blount Triple Crown of Running and is a 5K (3.1 miles) road race & 1-mile fun run/walk in Alcoa. A portion of the proceeds benefit Blount County‘s Area 15 Special Olympics.

Ballet Classes

For Ages 3-5

These classes are taught in a relaxed and non-competitive environment. Children will grow with grace and rhythm as they are taught proper placement techniques along with a fun, choreographed routine. Dances are taught to fun edited music that kids love! There will be an end-of-session performance to highlight what they have learned with no extra fees or dance attire necessary.

Jazz/Hip Hop Dance

This class offers a great exercise work-out in a fun and exciting atmosphere! Students will learn a routine filled with new hip hop moves choreographed to a clean and edited music mix. There will be a fun performance at the end of each session with no extra fees or dance attire necessary.

    Gymnastics, Movement, Music & More

    For Ages 2-5 Years


    These classes include fun, monthly themes that let your child learn the fun sport of gymnastics while expanding their imaginations. Music is used to expand on each month’s theme with dancing, singing, rhythm sticks, and musical instruments. Brain power and brain building exercises are incorporated each month to stimulate left and right brain activity, sensory awareness, fine motor skills, and kindergarten readiness skills. Gymnastic skills are taught in proper progressions on bright, colorful preschool equipment with all equipment designed and sized for young hands and feet. Participants will learn beginner through intermediate skills on bars, beams, trampolines, and vaulting, as well as learn and enhance many of the gross motor skills needed. Classes are taught by qualified adult instructors, each with over 20 years of teaching experience.

    Beginner and Intermediate Tumbling Gymnastics

    For Ages 5-10

    This class will teach and enhance skills involving handstands, cartwheels, one-arm cartwheels and bridges for both the very beginner and intermediate students. Intermediate students will also work on round-offs, backbend kick-overs, and front and back handsprings. Classes are taught with proper skill progression for the safety of the child and with enthusiasm and motivation – never intimidation. Children that are 5 years old must have started Kindergarten.

    Advanced Tumbling/Back Handsprings

    For Ages 6-12

    This class is designed to teach the more advanced skills of the back handspring, round-off back handsprings, standing backtuck and front handsprings. Students in this class should have a good round-off and be able to do a back walk-over with a spot. Drills such as handstands, bridge kick-overs and jump backs will be repeated in this class to help students become a stronger tumbler.

    Kids In Clay Pottery Classes

    For Ages 6-10

    Students will create fun projects as well as learn hand-building techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab work. Each class is unique and small in size. Students receive personal attention from instructor through the step-by-step process of making a pot, decorating, glazing and firing. Each class is project based and students will make a variety of bowls, dishes and sculptural art pieces. All work goes through two kiln firings; the second firing will make the pottery safe for food and drink, as well as use in the microwave and dishwasher. We use only health-approved clays and glaze-materials. Class includes clay and all firing and glaze materials.

From color theory, composition, line and shading, this class will develop skills in art and encourage creative problem solving.     Stream School for Kids

    Stream School for Kids is a place-based learning program that focuses on STEM concepts and incorporates environmental, chemical and aquatic sciences and stream flow mathematics. Students learn how to measure river flow, identify fish, observe macroinvertebrates, and run chemical tests on water samples during this free 4-day program.

    Flying Dolphins Swim Team

    GKAISA Form

    The GKAISA Form must be completed and returned to the Dolphins prior to participating.

    The Maryville-Alcoa Flying Dolphins is a competitive swim team for Ages 6-18. Interested swimmers must be able to swim at least 25 yards without stopping in order to participate. Cost is $95 per swimmer, and $80 each for additional siblings. Members of the Flying Dolphins also receive a 15% discount on season family pool passes. All participants must be registered by June 5.     Get Golf Ready – This program is designed to provide participants with a complete overview of the game of golf. Including the history of the sport, an introduction to the fundamentals including how to dress and act on the course, the purpose of each club, the art of chipping, pitching and hitting out of the green-side bunkers. You will be introduced to the fairway and how to use your irons, making and repairing divots, how to tee off, which metal-woods to use, scorekeeping, basic rules, and much more.

Policy for Reserving Practice Fields

This policy pertains to Little League teams and all other teams not participating in the Parks & Rec Adult Softball League. Click here for Parks & Rec teams' policy.

Reservations for practice fields are taken every Thursday, beginning March 12 through late August. Otherwise, fields are first come, first served unless being used by Parks & Rec programs such football and soccer. Teams should call at 10:00 a.m. so that everyone has the same opportunity. If you call before 10:00 a.m., you will be asked to call back, so please synchronize your watch with Parks & Rec's! Please note that field reservations are taken by phone only. No walk-ins please. Our phone lines will be very busy, so if you don't get through, please try again. When you call on Thursday, you will be reserving times for the following week (beginning the next day Friday through the following Thursday). Teams can reserve 1 field per week for 1 1/2 hours (M-F) or 2 hours (Sat. & Sun.) according to availability. Reservations are taken for the following fields: two at Everett Park, three at Sandy Springs Park (one being a small baseball field), one at Springbrook Park, and two at Pearson Springs Park (available week-ends only) for Ages 12 & under. Teams are encouraged to pick-up a Field Permit from the Parks & Rec Admin. Office to take with you to practice which shows you have the field reserved. Without your permit, you have no proof you have the field reserved!

Young Champions Cheerleading

Young Champions of Blount County is offering cheerleading classes for Ages 4-17 and every skill level from beginner (those that have never cheered) to advanced. Practices are held every Thursday at Everett Recreation Center. Class times depend on age: Ages 4-9 from 5:30-6:15pm, Ages 10-17 from 6:15-7pm, Level 5 Elite is by invitation and skills only and practice from 7-8:30pm.
