  Halloween Fun

SMOKY MOUNTAIN CLASSIC

Considered the premier softball tournament in the country,

the 2009 “Classic” will feature the top-ranked teams in the United States.

2009 11TH ANNUAL HEALTHY BLOUNT TRIPLE CROWN OF RUNNING

This event, sponsored by Blount Memorial Hospital and Maryville Orthopaedic Clinic, consists of the Spring Sprint (April 18), the Scholars Run (Aug. 15) and the Reindeer Run (Dec. 6).  To be eligible for the Triple Crown cash awards and a special memento, participants must compete in all three races.  To be eligible to win door prizes valued at a minimum of $100, participation in two races is required. Both runners and walkers at each event are eligible for great door prizes.

 

Scholars Run Road Race & Fun Run/Walk

This event is a 5K (3.1-mile) road race and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk and is the second event of the Triple Crown of Running.  The race begins and ends on the Maryville College campus. A portion of the proceeds from this race will fund two annual student scholarships sponsored by the Foothill Striders, Inc.  Individual and team competition will take place. Special awards will be given to the overall and masters winners, the top three finishers in each age division, and to the top three teams in the 5K. All Fun Run/Walk participants will receive a ribbon.

$15.00 pre-registration – must be postmarked by August 7

$18.00 day of race

 

Cost includes a T-shirt and great giveaways.

 

Reindeer Run

This run, which is the third leg of the Triple Crown of Running, is a 5K (3.1 miles) and a 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to the Empty Pantry Fund. Awards will be given to the overall and masters winners and the top three finishers in each age division. Prizes will also be given to the best Christmas costumes.  All Fun Run/Walk participants will receive a ribbon.  The Triple Crown of Running award ceremony will take place at this event.

FISH FOR JESUS – JULY 18 10:00AM – 5:00 PM

Free.  This annual event at the MLK Center is sponsored by New Vision C.O.G.I.C.  The day is filled with good, clean, Christian fun with games, entertainment, fellowship, and food.  Parents and children and encouraged to attend.

 

EMANCIPATION CELEBRATION – AUGUST 8 WITH TIME TO BE ANNOUNCED.

This is a day in the African-American community that recognizes the abolition of slavery.  Whether celebrated in May, August, or even February, a cultural holiday with speeches, fellowship, vendors,  and lots of food.  Celebrations occur on the date the state received the word and/or were occupied by Northern forces.  Tennessee was August 8th.  Sponsored by H.O.M.E. INC. and the MLK Center.

 

ALCOA BIKKER BROTHAS’ KIDDS’ BASH – AUGUST 15 12:00-5:00 PM

Free to children Ages 6-18.  An annual back-to-school celebration sponsored by our own community bikers’ club.  These fine young men and women opt to do this every year with very limited sponsorship.  The day is filled with games, food, back-to-school prizes and supplies, motorcycle safety demonstrations, and lots more.  Volunteer parents are welcome and needed.  Randall Cobb Sr./ABB President.

AREA 15 SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The Area 15 Special Olympics Program is open to Blount County citizens age 8 years & older. The ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them fair opportunities to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing public awareness of their capabilities and needs.

 

Schools and centers throughout Blount County participate in these events. However, any person whose school or center does not participate OR any adult who does not attend a school or center is eligible to compete as an independent athlete. Call Cookie Crowson at 983-9244 for more information.  Parks & Rec. conducts seven athletic competitions throughout the year.

Volunteers are always needed to provide many types of assistance during Special Olympic events.
